This post, I will admit from the start, may be interesting only to me. But it's my blog, so I'm going to do what I want! Also, tech sites like The Verge and Church Crunch have run this series, so I'm just a bandwagon follower. As a full time youth pastor, newly minted church website blogger (more on this later), and student at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, I spend more time out of the office than I do in it. So I present what is my mobile office, the bag I carry with me everywhere I go.
The Bag: Timbuk 2 Especial Claro Messenger (shown above)
I found this bag while I was shopping at REI a little while ago. I will admit, I have an obsession with bags. Even as I cleaned out my home office a little bit ago, I was storing countless backpacks and messengers in my closet. But this guy is massive, and an absolute joy to carry with me while I'm cycling. It holds everything I need and then a bit more for the day, so if I'm cycling or out for a long day I can throw a change of clothes or a toiletry kit or whatever I need for the day in there.
Every day will make frequent use of these three items. My 13 inch MacBook Pro is a steady workhorse, with me just about everywhere I go for blogging or taking notes. On the left is my Moleskin Notebook, which I use to journal, and to the right is my NIV Bible fashioned to look like a Moleskin Notebook, because I'm too hipster for my own good. The thing I love about the Bible is that is has a pocket in the back just like the notebooks, so I can hold my paper copy of the daily lectionary and a few notes and ideas.
Of course if you're going to be mobile and work with technology, you'll need some cables. I have the power supply for my Mac, and a short VGA cable. As the tech dude at the church, I've learned to just have a VGA cable with me. You'd be amazed how many times someone wants to show a PowerPoint or a video and runs into trouble. And lastly (but deffinately not least!) my Beats solo earbuds. A while ago I treated myself to the best earbuds I could get a hand on, because if I'm going to be working in the library or a Starbucks I need my tunes with me, and they might as well be thumping! The messenger bag has an awesome storage compartment in the front flap, so all of these cables stay neatly wrapped and out of the way when I'm digging around in the bottom of the bag.
School starts next week, so I have to be supplied! Here you see two folders that I have carried with me for about 3 years now. What can I say, these plastic guys are game day players, so I just keep reusing them. Usually I take all my class notes on my laptop, but with Greek coming at me this year, I picked up a cheapo (yet funny) old fashioned paper notebook to write out Greek letters and what not. If I'm going to suffer through Greek, I might as well smile to myself every time I grab my notebook.
Here are some odds and ends I keep in the bag. I will only use Pilot G2 pens, especially in my Bible, for reasons that only a psychiatrist could explain. I keep a sharpie around, as it is super handy for marking up chord charts for worship. Also pictured are a Mac VGA adapter, an iPhone charger, and a micro USB cable to charge my bike lights when I'm out and about.
So, what's in your bag? Leave some comments below!
