It's been a good while since I've updated the Blog, but this morning I find myself at my "branch office" cracking away at some little projects, and I thought I'd keep us all posted on what's going on around here.
I am really really excited to be playing a show tomorrow night at Flood City Cafe in Johnstown! My good friend Dan Shaffer opened up this coffee shop, and I have to tell you as a dedicated coffee snob it is an incredible place to grab a great cup of joe. I'll be joined by my incredible friends Mike and Rachel, as well as the great Curt Scott, for an evening of covers, old songs from Tree Anthem and other bands from the past (an Everyday Giant song in the set? What?) as well as some new material I've been working on. You really don't want to miss this! The show starts at seven, and we'll be playing all the way until 10 PM. Come on by to hear some great music!
I've been reading for a class some of Karl Barth's church dogmatics. I am a huge fan! If you can get past the wordy-ness of the text, and get to focusing in on what Barth is really all about, it will blow your mind. Long and short of it is, if we rely on God for our justification through Christ (which we do), then where does our sanctification come from? If it was from our own abilities, it would be a works-based righteousness. God acts through the man Jesus Christ to be our own sanctification, and our job is to wake up to what God is doing in our midst. I know that was a bunch of nerdy theological talk, but man am I ever excited about it! I would imagine more Barth posts are coming soon to a J-Blog near you!
The Rabbit Room
Let's be as clear as we possibly can be, a lot of Christian music is absolutely terrible. Not the message so much most of the time (though there are some songs that make me want to drive my car off a cliff), but a lot of the Christian music that's out there is sugar coated pop junk that I have no interest in (yes, I have turned into a grumpy old man, even as I type those words). When people ask me if I heard the latest song on KLOVE, I almost always feel a little embarrassed to say that I don't listen to KLOVE, because most of it is the musical equivalent of the Steelers Fan Feast at McDonalds: fun, but in no way nutritional. Behold! The Rabbit Room! I stumbled upon this website a few weeks ago, and man has it been gold ever since. If it's worth nothing else, it's worth the internet radio station, which I listen to constantly. Check them out at www.rabbitroom.com
More updates and posts to come.
